Dr. Appt. Follow-Up

My little guy is still behind on his immunizations, since they didn’t get done at his appointment this afternoon.  We had started leaning more toward suspicion of a rash, since the bumps had increased, and the Doctor confirmed it.  B. has FULL. BLOWN. CHICKEN. POX.  The Dr. mentioned that he has not seen a case like this in quite some time.  It is all over, including all in his mouth.  B. is hardly eating anything because it hurts and drinking out of spout sippy cups hurts too.  Thankfully we have a couple of straw type sippy cups.

We are at a loss trying to figure out how he may have contracted it.  I’ve read on WebMD that the incubation period is 14-26 days. Also from WebMD:

Chickenpox is caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It can spread easily. You can get it from an infected person who sneezes, coughs, or shares food or drinks. You can also get it if you touch the fluid from a chickenpox blister.

Ironically, B. had the vaccine in December.  I was concerned, since we were behind in some of his shots, that perhaps we hadn’t had it yet, but the Doctor confirmed he did have the vaccine in Dec and that there is a 10-15% chance of contracting it anyway.  More from WebMD:

Rarely, people who have had the vaccine still get chickenpox. This is called a breakthrough infection. If this happens, you will probably get a milder form of the virus, with fewer blisters and symptoms.

Except he did not get a milder form.

OK, I apologize if I sound as though I was ignorant on this topic.  That’s probably because I was.  I am reading and learning as I write this… because you want to know the kicker>

I’ve never had Chicken Pox.

So, I also discussed with the Doctor what I needed to watch for, what I could treat on my own, and what symptoms meant I needed medical attention immediately.  Nice.

We are still processing the news, dealing with a very uncomfortable, miserable, probably hungry since he hasn’t eaten hardly anything, overly tired (not sleeping well the past few days) little boy.  Before coming home, we made a stop for supplies… Benadryl, oatmeal bath, Pedialyte, and Pediasure.  Hopefully we can make it a little more tolerable for him as we wait it out.

Poor, poor baby. I’m so sorry he’s feeling so bad. That’s just awful.

And, poor Mommy! When your kids are sick, it’s almost just as tiring as being sick yourself.

so sorry to hear about your baby having this disease. You and your son will be in my prayers. I hear oatmeal baths are very soothing.

I have a friend who has the chicken pox for the 6th time right now because she’s never had a serious case of it. And her 8 yo son has it even though he had his shots!

Hope he feels better soon and you avoid it!

OY! Christy that’s terrible. I’m so sorry! I read up on Chicken pox when we got them too because little W was born while his sisters were right in the middle of it. He didn’t get them, which is a good thing; he still had my immunity. I hope you get some rest soon.

Wow girl I know that’s tough…

Believe it or not my Mom “thought” I got the chickenpox as a kid.. turned out I didn’t.. I got the freakin’ measles and I was vaccinated too… I ended up catching the chicken pox from a pediatrics office at 16 yrs old.. it was the “worst” case ever… My Dad even got it, for supposedly the 2nd time in his life..

Let me know if you get it, I hope and pray you don’t though.. its harder on teens/adults!
