The day finally started winding down to a close and it was time to put Lil Roo to bed. We started doing our nightly, before bed, cleanup routine. Incidentally, that was also the moment I got an impulse to rearrange his room. It started with just picking up the toys, then I figured I’d go ahead and do a quick vacuum. Then… well, next thing I know I’m moving just about everything around. The only things that didn’t get moved was the bed and the dresser, and trust me, I was considering that also. I have a variety of small / medium containers I use to corral the toys, in addition to the closet shelves, and there are also large toy vehicles and ride-ons that just sit out.
I have been trying different methods of organizing his toys, books, and misc stuff, but I haven’t found a system that works exactly like I want it to. I’ve had my eye on a large bookshelf type deal, with cubes instead of straight across shelves. I saw something like this on an old episode of Jon & Kate quite awhile ago and have been thinking about it since. I found this at IKEA, which is basically what I have in mind:
Keep in mind, that I removed unearthly amounts of toys leading up to Christmas, in the hopes that I would be able to have better control over the toys. Uh, wrong.

We use the Ikea Expedit for toys, too. It’s only two squares high, though, and four long. We put in canvas bins from Target ($5 each or so) to hold the toys. It’s working out really well. The bins allow for a bit of sorting that shelves don’t. Plus they HIDE the TOYS! Which is good, because it’s in our living room.
OH I like that shelf and the comment from Angie above! Wow. Some of our toys are in our living room too. Hmmmmm. I wonder if dh can build something. hmmm.

we bought one of these in the expresso color awhile ago and have since moved it into our babys room. i love it. it’s great for storage and highlighting decorative peices as well.
Thanks for the feedback. We have what seems like a zillion projects & purchases planned for the house, but I’m almost 100% certain now this is going on the list, too. The more I look at it and think about it, the more I like it.
Anyone know what the individual cubes measurements are?
I have that in my finished basement for my kids toys and LOVE it! I use plastic bins I found at IKEA in the cubes. It works great to get the toys off the floor.
