Christy Update

Wednesday, February 25th, 2009

Howdy!  The blog was starting to look a little bare post-wise, so I thought I should at least check in.  To be honest, my head has not been in the blog lately. In fact, my head has felt like it is full of cotton balls, doing well enough just to string together two coherent thoughts in a row.

I’m ill. And not the Licensed To Ill kind the Beastie Boys sang about. Ill as in having an annoying cough, sore throat, general weakness, and a few other not so uber fun symptoms.  And that isn’t the worst of it.

My precious little two-year has also been sick.  Hubs got take out for lunch yesterday and usually Lil Roo loves to push in the little button thingies that tell you what kind of drink you have. Well, yesterday, he was unable to. He was too weak and his tiny little hand and fingers would tremble as he tried to.  I “helped” so he could get it done, because he wasn’t giving up. It broke our hearts to see him feeling that weak.  We gave him meds regularly, though less often than actually suggested (I always waver between wanting him well as soon as possible and the fear that he’ll get too much of the meds in his system and feel all medincey-head) and we’ve kept the Pedialyte flowing. “Orange drink” is fabulous. Pedialyte, I hereby confess my undying love for you.  If you, in your orange-drinkness, were a man, and if I were not already married, I think I’d marry you.

The little guy is on the mend, but not yet 100%. He is so much better than yesterday morning / early afternoon though and that is a wonderful thing.  He still wakes during the night (since he’s been sick). He woke up from what must have a horrible dream during today’s naptime, fighting with his pillow, trying to get the pillowcase off.  He was very clingy and so easily upset for quite awhile after that.

We had family movie night tonight. We ordered in pizza and watched The Veggie Tales: The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything. Such. A. Cute. Movie. I just loved it.  Tonight was actually the second time I watched it and I’m not sure how many times Lil Roo has seen it now.  It has become one of our faves around here. It came in as a review; so I’ll be writing more about it, but if you haven’t seen it yet, get it. Too cute!!

In other news, hubs brother had open-heart surgery this morning.  He had a heart attack during the night at home several nights ago and went to the hospital the following day because of chest pain (which is when he found out he had the heart attack the night before).  He had two more heart attacks while in the hospital.  Last we heard, he was in recovery doing ok.  We are hoping to find out more tomorrow and possible visit (if I still have this cold hanging on, I’ll probably stay home and not take my sickness around.)  Prayers are much appreciated.

I’m not sure how mentioning a couple quick things turned into this long post… I guess I’m just wordy.  I’m hoping it at least makes some sort of sense.  The way I’m feeling at the moment, I’m not making any promises.

Spring Cleaning And Organizing Series

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

I am working on a Spring Cleaning And Organizing Series – if you have a product that you think would be a great fit, please contact me.  Likewise, I will be looking for a few guest posts throughout the series, so if you have some expertise in this area, I’d love to talk about the possibility of you doing a guest post on Shake The Salt.

Random Musings

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

OK, this has become kinda long, so bless your heart if you read through it…  just a lot on my mind, swirling around and trying to get it out!  J

Most of my thoughts these days feel random, so I figured a post of random musings would be appropriate.  J  We have officially begun redecorating the living room (we painted awhile back, then nothing else), thanks to a great deal Hubs came across. Ironically, the couch and loveseat set are beautiful, yet aren’t perfectly fit for the space.  I’m dealing with that… or pretending to, at least.  We’ve been rearranging the living room, trying to get the right fit {which we can get except that I’ve moved my computer space into the living room as well}.

At the moment, the desk is in the dining room (the living room and dining room basically being a somewhat combined space, so separating wall).  Not the effect I was going for and it is not boding well for the dining room situation, which I’m kinda ignoring for the time being. {Sigh}

I believe this weekend we are going shopping for flooring for the living room, dining room, and hallway.  I’m honestly NOT looking forward to the process of it going it, but am excited about how it will look once it is done. After the amount of foot traffic & pets through our living room and other areas (remember, we live in the country, on a dirt road), the carpet is a very sad sight and I’ve just never been crazy about linoleum. Thanks, but no thanks.  Flooring in other rooms will happen another time, LOL.  An entertainment center, tv, and new tables will round out the living room changes (well, that plus small décor touches – lamps, throw pillows, and whatnot).

I’ve recently started working from home for a family activities website, which I love, but I’m having a hard time being able to make contacts I need to during “regular business hours” thanks to my rambunctious toddler.  I am refocusing so that I can make better use of naptime and squeeze in the calls I need to make then and do other things when he is up and about (and loud, lol).  Do you work at home with a loud, needy, active, etc toddler? How do you manage your time both between the child and work and also with being able to work amidst the noise and fourteen billion requests? LOL!  I’d love some feedback – either tell me you are in the same boat or give me some ideas I can use.  It gets frustrating sometimes, but I know there has to be a better way.

I love my blog, but I am often at a loss when it comes to explaining it.  I originally created the Multitasking Mama blog to share deals and document my frugal shopping journey.  I changed the name & moved because the Multitasking Mama title was so overused and there was even a post written by another Multitasking Mama about it (as though I had taken her blog title). Ironically there is yet another MM blog making the rounds. So, here I am, but what to say about it? I love doing the reviews - trying new products and seeing new ideas – and giveaways. I still do frugal shopping and share some of that. There is also a lot of mish mash of other stuff, but I’m never able to fully put my finger on a good description.  Maybe because I don’t feel completely “settled”, my blog isn’t either.   I have been thinking of having a tagline contest at some point. We’ll see how that plays out.

I recently purchased Photoshop and plan to try my hand at creating banners and buttons for new blogs I’m working on. This could be scary, but I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

You are your brand.  Your blog is your brand.  Some days I really want to pursue the whole branding deal, but sometimes I think it seems I bite off more than I could chew and may just be better sitting back and taking the relaxed road.  (Or maybe I’m just second guessing myself, who knows.)

I’ve been struggling with my weight for a little while now, which is something I hadn’t dealt with simply because it was so foreign to me.  Hypothyroid issues about 8 years ago, which balanced out but not before making its mark, then a pregnancy left me in a position I was neither used to nor dealing with.  It is something that I am now taking steps to deal with.  I may not post descriptive updates, but I do plan to update about that from time to time.

There’s so much more, but I think I should stop for a while. (As everyone that has read this far says: THANK YOU, haha).

Toddler Winter Wear: Shoes

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

There is a hint of Spring in the air, or at least a subtle tease that Spring is coming, but February can be one of the coldest months of the year – downright frigid in some places… and then there is the snow to deal with!  I’ve gathered a few options for you to keep your toddler’s footsies warm and dry when the weather (and ground) is cold and wet.

KAMIK

Have a little trendsetter on your hands? Kamik has adorable snowshoes for your little Miss Fashionista or Mr. Stylin’.  We tested out the light blue Kamik Frosty2 in the Utah snow with great success.  Most importantly, they kept his feet warm and dry while he romped about in the snow.  He was certainly my little trendsetter, even if Mommie was the only on-looker.  Need to know: Kamik boots are weather-proof, made to withstand temps of –25 F and – 32 C, and have Thermal Guard cold weather removable liners.

The Frosty2 is available in 6 colors, full sizes 5-10, and has the following features:

Quilted Nylon Upper with Foam Backing

Removable 6mm Thermal Guard Liner

Moisture Wicking Lining

Front Zipper Closure & Gusset Tongue

Snow Collar with Bungee Lock

Waterproof & Flexible Synthetic Rubber Shell

IGLOO Outsole Maximizes Traction

 Height: 6.5 Inches

Weight Per Pair: 1.11 Lbs.

BUY IT: Kamik Frosty2 Snow Boot: $35 - $37

AIRWALK

The Airwalk Toddler Edge in black with red detailing from Payless Shoe Source is a sturdy, reliable weather boot for your active toddler – able to take whatever hard play your toddler has in mind.  Insulated with ThermaLite technology, these boots are able to withstand temps at lows of –4 F / -20 C.  My favorite quality is what you don’t see – the traction. Sometimes “cute” shoes sacrifice this very important safety standard, but you’ll find high quality traction on the Airwalk Toddler Edge.  IT features three Velcro straps and stands 4.5 inches high. These boots are ideal for rugged outdoor play in cold weather & snow.

SMARTFIT

Another great product from Payless Shoe Source is the Toddler SmartFit Waterproof Boot – the shoe my son wanted to sleep in & is truly upset when they have to come off!  From Payless: The classic rugged boot is seam-sealed and treated to bead water to keep his feet dry. The upper has a zipper closure for convenience and can be cleaned with a damp sponge. The laces are decorative. Manmade materials. All Smartfit shoes are built with Tried and True Technology: wiggle room for toes, easy on/easy off and durable design.

The Smartfit Waterproof Boot is ideal for most winter weather climes (and even great in non-winter months when rain abounds).  These are a new favorite in our house!

BUY IT: SmartFit Waterproof Boot $23

POLLIWALKS

In the “just too cute for words” category: Polliwalks Puppy Furry Clog. LOVE IT!  They are adorable, the inside is very soft, and the soles create impressions of puppy paws in the snow or soft dirt.  My son sometimes likes to wear them as he would slippers – if they are that comfortable, it works for me.  His comfort & happiness = big win!

They are available in full sizes 5-10 and in 4 color combinations (we have the gray & navy).

BUY IT: Polliwalks Puppy Furry Slip-On Shoes $29

Mom Faves

Monday, February 16th, 2009

Have you heard about
Mom Faves?  It is an awesome site, the brainchild of Josh & Rebecca Unfried where you can favorite sites you love as well as a host of other things (recipes, places, etc).  There is quite a list of options and you can “fave” absolutely anything you want to.  Head on over and check it out.  While you are there, maybe you’d like to fave Shake The Salt {nothing like blatant self-promotion, right? LOL!} .  You can find me on Mom Faves here.

If you add a site or anything else to Mom Faves and would like another “vote” for it, just let me know.  J

Starting Living Room Redecoration

Saturday, February 14th, 2009

I have several partially written blog posts that I really should finish up and publish.  Instead, I have been vacuuming and cleaning in anticipation of my new couches that should be here any time now. Woot!

This is the first of many changes & newness coming to the living room.  We’ll be getting a new entertainment center, tables, television, moving the fish tank to the dining room, replacing the carpet with laminate flooring, and possibly adding another window. I have things in mind for other rooms as well.  I can’t wait!
