Everyday I am amazed at something new my son says or does. Sometimes I don’t always notice a transition, but then there will be this moment when I realize there has been this transition. Babies and toddlers are famous for investigating with their mouths – everything goes in. One day a couple of months ago, I realized he quietly passed that stage.
Another transition is sentences. He breezed past his second birthday using, at best, two words together. Then one day I noticed he was stringing three words and more together. He talks about himself in the third person a lot, which is adorably cute. He has, however, just started using “I”. “I want that” he says now – of course he wants it; whatever the particular “it” is at the moment, usually something just out of reach that he needs help getting. I’m now dreading the influence of kid-targeted commercials, and trips to the store that place us within 400 miles of the toy department, but that’s another post.
Last night, without warning or prompting, as the three of us were piled up on the loveseat, he said, “I love you, Mom” followed by “I love you, Daddy”. Heart. Melt.
The sentiment was so beautiful, but I couldn’t help but also be proud of the complete sentence structure. Heart melting and gushing with pride all at the same time. I fell in love with this tiny being all over again.
