Transferring Content From DirecTV DVRs To Disk Or Computer

In my attempt to geek out my media / TV set up, I am also considering attempting to transfer content from two DirecTV DVRs to a computer hard drive or disk.  The planning for the over-all set up is going to take awhile since I have a lot of things to research, specific purchases to make, and I need to allow time to slowly digest what I am researching and learning so I can do it right.

My current information quest is the possibility of transferring content from two DirecTV DVRs – one is a much older DVR, probably circa 2005 / 2006, and the other is a little newer (DVR Plus?).  Here are some of the resources I’ve come up with, though I still have a bit of reading to do:
