Hurricane Season 2010: First Named Storm Of The Season - Tropical Storm Alex

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

Living in Florida, I like to stay aware of all tropical activity, wherther it is just a depression forming off the coast of Africa, or a full blown hurricane headed our way.  Thankfully, our immediate area has been very blessed not to have a direct hurricane hit in quite a number of years.

We are well into the first month of Hurricane Season 2010, which is officially June 1 - November 30.  I say officially since storms have occured outside of the “official” window.

Tropical Storm Alex, which formed last night as a Tropical Depression in the Western Caribbean, is the first named storm of 2010.  Thankfully for our area, we are certain to be in the clear for this one, and most importantly, it looks like it will completely miss the oil spill area of the Gulf of Mexico.

From Weather.com:

Alex is forecast to move inland near the Belize/Mexico border overnight Saturday night/early Sunday morning, move across the Yucatan Peninsula on Sunday, then move out into the Bay of Campeche in the early morning hours on Monday. Alex could weaken to a tropical depression during this time. After that, Alex, steadily strengthening, is expected to move very slowly to the northwest in the southern Gulf of Mexico through midweek.

With tropical storm conditions expected within the next 24 to 36 hours, a tropical storm warning has been issued for the Yucatan Coast of Mexico from Chetumal to Cancun, the entire coast of Belize, and the islands of Roatan, Guanaja, and Utila in Honduras.

Of course, if you are familiar with tropical weather, you know that tropical storms and hurricanes can change directions on a whim.

NOAA has predicted there will be 14-23 Named Storms, 8-14 Hurricanes, and 3-7 Major Hurricanes during the 2010 Hurricane Season.

Are Obama’s Abilities Paralyzed When It Comes To The Oil Spill?

Friday, June 25th, 2010

I don’t typically write about current event or political type stuff, but I do sometimes wonder and think on them, just like the next person, so you just may find me dipping my toe in those waters on my blog… consider yourself warned.

Today is Day 67 of the BP Oil Spill Crisis and although I’ve watched the news and scoured the internet, I find very little that Obama has done to improve the current situation.

There is the red tape that is stalling some of the cleanup effort because of research that needs to be done… they want to make sure none of the cleanup efforts negatively affects wildlife.  OK.  In a perfect world, this might actually make sense.  It is the very LACK of these very needed efforts that is ALLOWING danger and death to wildlife to occur. I get not throwing common sense to the wind, the efforts should be done cautiously when it comes to wildlife, but ongoing lengthy studies? While wildlife becomes more and more damaged?  No. It is just a hindrance.  Let those that can do what they can.

I see President Obama as a wonderful, charismatic speaker.  He can bring the house down when he speaks of his vision and ideas.  He moves people. But with all due respect, talk is his specialty. Action? Not so much.  At least not when it comes to the recent oil spill.  The blame game he is good at, and I totally agree BP needs to be held fully accountable for its actions - or lack thereof.  But when Obama took so long to properly address the situation and get himself down there, it was hard to swallow. When, on Day 67, he still hasn’t done much to advance the cleanup & repair issue, I just wonder… does he feel paralyzed in the face of a real crisis?

Currently, the shores closest to where I live are not affected, but if the oil starts flowing in the gulf stream (which is already possible, but even more likely if a tropical storm of any intensity starts whipping it around), then it is only a matter of a very short time before ALL of Florida’s shores are vastly affected… as well as the potential to affect the shores of the entire East Coast.  Not exactly the way I want this issue to be taken to Washington.

My heart breaks for the people affected and the poor, sweet animals that have no idea what is going on.  I am concerned about the approaching tropical system - and those that will comes behind it - and what they will do to this already desperate situation.

Sneak Peek: Tinker Bell And The Great Fairy Rescue

Monday, June 21st, 2010

In celebration of today’s first day of Summer and the Summer Solstice, the Fairies of Pixie Hollow are sharing a special fly-by ‘sneak peek’ of their latest adventure!

This particular clip showcases the first time Tinker Bell meets a human for the first time – an 8-year old girl named Lizzy. Lizzy discovers that her dream to meet a fairy is finally coming true. She also learns that Tinker Bell speaks in jingles and that fairies can’t fly in the rain. It’s a very cute piece that showcases the beginning of a very unique friendship.

A full 8-minutes of the film!!

Planning To Make Freezer Meals In Preparation For The Baby

Saturday, June 12th, 2010

I think I am in bloggy love. I have been thinking about making freezer meals during September and October, but beyond this desire to make these preparations? I’m clueless.  Winging it in the kitchen for me isn’t only impossible, it could be dangerous. I like very descriptive, very detailed directions, and then hold my breath that it comes out half right.

Sooo.. back to being in bloggy love… I found this blog that looks to be pretty amazing.  {Understand that I am easily awed by anyone that appears to know what they are doing in the kitchen, heehee.}  Make Ahead Meals For Busy Moms.  And by “busy” I am interpreting that to mean, solely for my own benefit, does not want to spend a whole lotta time in the kitchen

So, the first recipe I came across on her blog was Stuffed Shells and Rotisserie Chicken. I ate dinner like 5 minutes ago and I would love to have some of that. Right. Now. However, I’m not really crazy about Ricotti cheese. Would it be completely wrong if I didn’t stuff the shells with it? And she suggests the disposable aluminum baking tins for this one, but I was hoping to use large freezer Ziplock bags for the meals to fit as many as possible in the freezer.  Could I save the sprinkling of Parmesan cheese on top for when I transfer it to a pan to bake and just freeze it in a Ziplock?  Also, since it says serves 8-9 and hubs doesn’t like spinach, this should stretch to about three meals.  Score

Photo belongs to Make-Ahead Meals For Busy Moms.

OK, truth is, I am a little fickle. As I browsed her blog, there ws some pretty decent stuff, but a couple or so pages in I really wasn’t finding that many freezer / make-ahead meals.  I’m sure I will as I keep looking, but I am now onto explore other blogs and sites for ideas. In and out of bloggy love that fast….

19 Weeks!

Friday, June 11th, 2010

Just one week shy of the official halfway mark - and one week shy of finding out whether Lil Roo is getting a baby brother or baby sister (provided the baby within cooperates!).  Lil Roo continues to insist he wants a baby brother - NOT a baby sister.  However, when I was asking him what names he would like, he did have a choice if it is a girl - Tinkerbell. Ummm… about that… If he does happen to get a baby sister, I guess he is all set with a nickname for her.  Just don’t look for us to put Tinkerbell on the birth certificate.  After all, it isn’t Irish.

;)

A funny thing happened on the way to the halfway mark… The extreme ickiness started lessening and I was certain, if I squinted just enough, I could see light at the end of the tunnel. Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids.  {Hush your mouth if you know that “dates” me and if you have no idea where that came from, then just ignore it, heehee.}  It seems it was something of a false alarm. Although I don’t feel as extremely icky as I did previously, I’m still not over the “morning” sickness (which has nothing to do with a time of day at all, except perhaps it occurs more at nighttime for me) and if I do more than 15 seconds of intense labor (and by intense labor I mean anything at all), I feel wiped out.  OK, I exxagerated a little. I can usually push it to 15-30 minutes, but seriously?  My house is practically falling apart because I can’t do all I need to do. Awesome Husband does a lot, but I still look at all the things that need to be done and that is before I even think about my “before the baby comes” to do list.  Ummm, when does nesting start?

Last night (Wed night) I had this dream I was somehow in a hospital about 6 or so hours away from home.  On purpose.  Not cool.  In the dream, hubby tells me that was where they (my OB’s office?) told him to take me. {Point of fact, my OB’s office is IN the hospital I’ll actual be delivering in, lol.}  In this dream, I am in complete freak-out mode because it is NOT where I want to be. Yeah, obviously. It seems I’ve been assigned a room and I am there with my hubby and son waiting to go into labor. The supposed delivering doctor routinely checks on me, inquiring if labor has started. He is just weird. He wants to induce, which my OB said they absolutely would NOT do because of the previous ceserean. I want to go home. NOW. But hubby tells me it is too risky because I could go into labor during the drive.  Also, at some point during this dream, there was a cracked, empty egg on the floor. It probably made more sense than the rest of the dream, LOL!  My after-waking thoughts? Was I sleeping the entire drive there & had no idea what was going on??? As frustrated as I was in the dream and completely NOT wanting to be THERE, I’d be fine with the risky drive. We could stop at any point and call 911 (which would provide immediate help, plus they’d know where the nearest hospital was) AND hubby is also a paramedic, so he’s well capable of handling an EMS issue while waiting for supplies & transport to arrive. Just sayin’.  Such a crazy dream and it was kinda funny the actual frustration and anger I felt during the dream - amazing how real it can seem even when none of it makes sense.

Back to the real world… as I am approaching the mid-point of the pregnancy, I am faced with deciding to attempt a VBAC or have another c-section.  The circumstances surrounding my previous emergency-ish c-section seem (to me at least) to have more to do with me than with that particular pregnancy or birth (since they say each one can be different).  So, it makes me wonder how likely it would be to have a repeat (well, minus the whole inducing part).  If I go to 41 weeks again, it is automatic C/S. Do not pass go, do not collect $200.  (Even though I could use the $200, heehee.)  I just worry that if I attempt the VBAC and need to do the C/S afterall that I would lose control of the situation and my birth plan preferences (even for C/S) may go out the window… since it would then be considered an emergency c-section.  Guess I’m thinking out loud here, need to talk to Doc about this next week at the appointment, but it is just what I’ve been debating over, and going back and forth.

Anyhoo…. Here’s a graphic of a 19 week baby-on-the-way (via BabyCenter.com) & some interesting facts

Your baby weighs about 8 1/2 ounces and measures 6 inches, head to bottom — about the size of a large heirloom tomato. Her arms and legs are in the right proportions to each other and the rest of her body now. Her kidneys continue to make urine and the hair on her scalp is sprouting. A waxy protective coating called the vernix caseosa is forming on her skin to prevent it from pickling in the amniotic fluid.

Think you’re big now? You’ll start growing even faster in the weeks to come. As a result, you may notice some achiness in your lower abdomen or even an occasional brief, stabbing pain on one or both sides — especially when you shift position or at the end of an active day. Most likely, this is round ligament pain. The ligaments that support your uterus are stretching to accommodate its increasing weight. This is nothing to be alarmed about, but call your practitioner if the pain continues even when you’re resting or becomes severe.

Round ligament pain? Ah, now that I know your name, I can dislike you even more personally! That junk does NOT feel good. I don’t do the whole pain thing real well, so what that may feel like for a normal person is multiplied for me. Please let’s have a little less of that? Me no likey the pain.

I know I’ve been so sporadic with my postings, but I hope to provide a weekly pregnancy update (aka: babble session, lol) from here on out. It helps to get the thoughts out anyway.  So, thanks for reading, especially since I have no earthly clue how NOT to write an uber long post.

;)

Slow Month At SwagBucks, But $15 in FREE Amazon Gift Cards Isn’t Too Shabby

Wednesday, June 2nd, 2010

I didn’t meet my goal in May of getting $25 in Amazon gift cards via SwagBucks each month - I only hit $15.  Granted, many rock-roll at SwagBucks to a level I just can’t quite touch, but then again, I’m pretty laid back about it. I do use it to access websites.  Instead of typing Facebook.com in my browser (or any site I want to visit), I type it in my SwagBucks toolbar search box (minus the dot com). I do several searches a day and have decent luck with it, but searches is about all I do… no completing offers, shopping through SwagBucks, etc. You can. And you can earn a lot more. I just don’t. I’m lazy, lol. But for my little bit of effort, I’d say I’m rewarded well…

For a little over 3 months worth of using SwagBucks as my primary search engine, I’ve earned $70 in Amazon gift cards.  That’ll come in handy toward the end of the year when Christmas shopping or getting a few extras for baby.

Everything about SwagBucks is COMPLETELY FREE!  If you want to complete offers that do require a purchase or trial or if you use SwagBucks as your portal to do online shopping, sure you’ll pay for whatever you choose. But me? I don’t pay a dime. All free. $70 worth of freeness so far. Want to do it too? Click HERE.
