Living in Florida, I like to stay aware of all tropical activity, wherther it is just a depression forming off the coast of Africa, or a full blown hurricane headed our way.  Thankfully, our immediate area has been very blessed not to have a direct hurricane hit in quite a number of years.

We are well into the first month of Hurricane Season 2010, which is officially June 1 – November 30.  I say officially since storms have occured outside of the “official” window.

Tropical Storm Alex, which formed last night as a Tropical Depression in the Western Caribbean, is the first named storm of 2010.  Thankfully for our area, we are certain to be in the clear for this one, and most importantly, it looks like it will completely miss the oil spill area of the Gulf of Mexico.

From Weather.com:

Alex is forecast to move inland near the Belize/Mexico border overnight Saturday night/early Sunday morning, move across the Yucatan Peninsula on Sunday, then move out into the Bay of Campeche in the early morning hours on Monday. Alex could weaken to a tropical depression during this time. After that, Alex, steadily strengthening, is expected to move very slowly to the northwest in the southern Gulf of Mexico through midweek.

With tropical storm conditions expected within the next 24 to 36 hours, a tropical storm warning has been issued for the Yucatan Coast of Mexico from Chetumal to Cancun, the entire coast of Belize, and the islands of Roatan, Guanaja, and Utila in Honduras.

Of course, if you are familiar with tropical weather, you know that tropical storms and hurricanes can change directions on a whim.

NOAA has predicted there will be 14-23 Named Storms, 8-14 Hurricanes, and 3-7 Major Hurricanes during the 2010 Hurricane Season.
